But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.

“But should we say, From men—they feared the people: for all verily held John to be a prophet. And they answered Jesus and say, We know not. And Jesus saith unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. ”
“If we should say, 'From men'"--they feared the people, for all held John to really be a prophet. They answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said to them, "Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things."”
“But if we say,‘From people–’”(they feared the crowd, for they all considered John to be truly a prophet). So they answered Jesus,“We don’t know.” Then Jesus said to them,“Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.””
