— Luke 20:5, NET Bible
“And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?”
“And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? ”
“They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why didn't you believe him?'”
“But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe in him?”
“And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?”
“And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?”
and said to him,“Tell us: By what authority are you doing these things? Or who is it who gave you this authority?”
He answered them,“I will also ask you a question, and you tell me:
John’s baptism– was it from heaven or from people?”
So they discussed it with one another, saying,“If we say,‘From heaven,’ he will say,‘Why did you not believe him?’
But if we say,‘From people,’ all the people will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”
So they replied that they did not know where it came from.
Then Jesus said to them,“Neither will I tell you by whose authority I do these things.”
