"And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room. "
— Luke 14:9, American King James Version
“And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.”
“and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place. ”
“and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, 'Make room for this person.' Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.”
“So the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed, you will begin to move to the least important place.”
“And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee: Give this man place. And then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.”
“And then the giver of the feast will come to you and say, Give your place to this man; and you, with shame, will have to take the lowest seat.”
“And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.”
And they could not answer him again to these things. ¶
And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them,
When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you be bidden of him;
And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room.
But when you are bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with you.
For whoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. ¶
Then said he also to him that bade him, When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brothers, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also bid you again, and a recompense be made you.
