King James Version
Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.
They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.
Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.
We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.
Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.
Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.
For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
— Psalms 48:2-1953, King James Version
“Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, Is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, The city of the great King. God hath made himself known in her palaces for a refuge. “Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King. God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge. For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together. They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away. Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail. With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of Yahweh of Armies, in the city of our God. God will establish it forever. Selah. We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the midst of your temple. As is your name, God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is full of righteousness. Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of your judgments. Walk about Zion, and go around her. Number its towers. Mark well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the next generation. For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death. For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah.”
“It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king. God is in its fortresses; he reveals himself as its defender. For look, the kings assemble; they advance together. As soon as they see, they are shocked; they are terrified, they quickly retreat. Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth. With an east wind you shatter the large ships. We heard about God’s mighty deeds, now we have seen them, in the city of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, in the city of our God. God makes it permanently secure.(Selah) We reflect on your loyal love, O God, within your temple. The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth is worthy of your reputation, O God. You execute justice! Mount Zion rejoices; the towns of Judah are happy, because of your acts of judgment. Walk around Zion! Encircle it! Count its towers! Consider its defenses! Walk through its fortresses, so you can tell the next generation about it! For God, our God, is our defender forever! He guides us!”
“Hear these things, all ye nations: give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world. All you that are earthborn, and you sons of men: both rich and poor together. My mouth shall speak wisdom: and the meditation of my heart understanding. I will incline my ear to a parable; I will open my proposition on the psaltery. Why shall I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me. They that trust in their own strength, and glory in the multitude of their riches, No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: he shall not give to God his ransom, Nor the price of the redemption of his soul: and shall labour for ever, And shall still live unto the end. He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: the senseless and the fool shall perish together: And they shall leave their riches to strangers: And their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever. Their dwelling places to all generations: they have called their lands by their names. And man when he was in honour did not understand; he is compared to senseless beasts, and is become like to them. This way of theirs is a stumblingblock to them: and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth. They are laid in hell like sheep: death shall feed upon them. And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their help shall decay in hell from their glory. But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, when he shall receive me. Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased. For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him. For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: and he will praise thee when thou shalt do well to him. He shall go in to the generations of his fathers: and he shall never see light. Man when he was in honour did not understand: he hath been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them. ”
“Beautiful in its high position, the joy of all the earth, is the mountain of Zion, the mountain of God, the town of the great King. In its buildings God is seen to be a high tower. For see! the kings came together by agreement, they were joined together. They saw it, and so were full of wonder; they were troubled, and went quickly away in fear. Shaking came on them and pain, as on a woman in childbirth. By you the ships of Tarshish are broken as by an east wind. As it came to our ears so have we seen it, in the town of the Lord of armies, in the town of our God; God will keep it fixed for ever. (Selah.) Our thoughts were of your mercy, O God, while we were in your Temple. As your name is, O God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth; your right hand is full of righteousness. Let there be joy in the mountain of Zion, and let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of your wise decisions. Make your way about Zion, and go round it, numbering its towers. Take note of its strong walls, looking well at its fair buildings; so that you may give word of it to the generation which comes after. Because this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide.”
