King James Version
The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.
Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.
That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,
That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?
Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
For the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.
Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.
If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
— Proverbs 22:12-1953, King James Version
“The eyes of Jehovah preservehim that hathknowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man. The sluggard saith, There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets. The mouth of strange women is a deep pit; He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; Butthe rod of correction shall drive it far from him. He that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, Andhe that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want. Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips. That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have madethemknown to thee this day, even to thee. Have not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge, To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee? Rob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them. Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, And get a snare to thy soul. Be thou not one of them that strike hands, Orof them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee? Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men. ”
“The eyes of Yahweh watch over knowledge; but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful. The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!" The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit: he who is under Yahweh's wrath will fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child: the rod of discipline drives it far from him. Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty. Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Apply your heart to my teaching. For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips. That your trust may be in Yahweh, I teach you today, even you. Haven't I written to you thirty excellent things of counsel and knowledge, To teach you truth, reliable words, to give sound answers to the ones who sent you? Don't exploit the poor, because he is poor; and don't crush the needy in court; for Yahweh will plead their case, and plunder the life of those who plunder them. Don't befriend a hot-tempered man, and don't associate with one who harbors anger: lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul. Don't you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts. If you don't have means to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you? Don't move the ancient boundary stone, which your fathers have set up. Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won't serve obscure men.”
“The eyes of the LORD watched over a cause, and subverted the words of the treacherous person. The sluggard has said,“There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the middle of the streets!” The mouth of an adulteress is like a deep pit; the one against whom the LORD is angry will fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him. The one who oppresses the poor to increase his own gain and the one who gives to the rich– both end up only in poverty. The Sayings of the Wise Incline your ear and listen to the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my instruction. For it is pleasing if you keep these sayings within you, and they are ready on your lips. So that your confidence may be in the LORD, I hereby make them known to you today– even you. Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, to show you true and reliable words, so that you may give accurate answers to those who sent you? Do not exploit a poor person because he is poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the LORD will plead their case and will rob the life those who are robbing them. Do not make friends with an angry person, and do not associate with a wrathful person, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. Do not be one who strikes hands in pledge or who puts up security for debts. If you do not have enough to pay, your bed will be taken right out from under you! Do not move an ancient boundary stone which was put in place by your ancestors. You have seen a person skilled in his work– he will take his position before kings; he will not take his position before obscure people.”
“The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge: and the words of the unjust are overthrown. The slothful man saith: There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the midst of the streets. The mouth of a strange woman is a deep pit: he whom the Lord is angry with, shall fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, and the rod of correction shall drive it away. He that oppresseth the poor, to increase his own riches, shall himself give to one that is richer, and shall be in need. Incline thy ear, and hear the words of the wise: and apply thy heart to my doctrine: Which shall be beautiful for thee, if thou keep it in thy bowels, and it shall flow in thy lips: That thy trust may be in the Lord, wherefore I have also shewn it to thee this day. Behold I have described it to thee three manner of ways, in thoughts and knowledge: That I might shew thee the certainty, and the words of truth, to answer out of these to them that sent thee. Do no violence to the poor, because he is poor: and do not oppress the needy in the gate: Because the Lord will judge his cause: and will afflict them that have afflicted his soul. Be not a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man: Lest perhaps thou learn his ways, and take scandal to thy soul. Be not with them that fasten down their hands, and that offer themselves sureties for debts: For if thou have not wherewith to restore, what cause is there that he should take the covering from thy bed? Pass not beyond the ancient bounds which thy fathers have set. Hast thou seen a man swift in his work? he shall stand before kings, and shall not be before those that are obscure. ”
“The eyes of the Lord keep knowledge, but by him the acts of the false man will be overturned. The hater of work says, There is a lion outside: I will be put to death in the streets. The mouth of strange women is a deep hole: he with whom the Lord is angry will go down into it. Foolish ways are deep-seated in the heart of a child, but the rod of punishment will send them far from him. He who is cruel to the poor for the purpose of increasing his profit, and he who gives to the man of wealth, will only come to be in need. Let your ear be bent down for hearing my words, and let your heart give thought to knowledge. For it is a delight to keep them in your heart, to have them ready on your lips. So that your faith may be in the Lord, I have made them clear to you this day, even to you. Have I not put in writing for you thirty sayings, with wise suggestions and knowledge, To make you see how certain are true words, so that you may give a true answer to those who put questions to you? Do not take away the property of the poor man because he is poor, or be cruel to the crushed ones when they come before the judge: For the Lord will give support to their cause, and take the life of those who take their goods. Do not be friends with a man who is given to wrath; do not go in the company of an angry man: For fear of learning his ways and making a net ready for your soul. Be not one of those who give their hands in an agreement, or of those who make themselves responsible for debts: If you have nothing with which to make payment, he will take away your bed from under you. Let not the old landmark be moved which your fathers have put in place. Have you seen a man who is expert in his business? he will take his place before kings; his place will not be among low persons.”
