King James Version
The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.
The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.
The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.
The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.
He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.
The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.
A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.
In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.
The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.
Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
The king’s favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.
— Proverbs 14:8-1953, King James Version
“The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way; But the folly of fools is deceit. A trespass-offering mocketh fools; But among the upright there is good will. The heart knoweth its own bitterness; And a stranger doth not intermeddle with its joy. The house of the wicked shall be overthrown; But the tent of the upright shall flourish. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; But the end thereof are the ways of death. Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; And the end of mirth is heaviness. The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways; And a good manshall be satisfiedfrom himself. The simple believeth every word; But the prudent man looketh well to his going. A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; But the fool beareth himself insolently, and is confident. He that is soon angry will deal foolishly; And a man of wicked devices is hated. The simple inherit folly; But the prudent are crowned with knowledge. The evil bow down before the good; And the wicked, at the gates of the righteous. The poor is hated even of his own neighbor; But the rich hath many friends. He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth; But he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he. Do they not err that devise evil? But mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good. In all labor there is profit; But the talk of the lipstendethonly to penury. The crown of the wise is their riches; But the folly of fools is only folly. A true witness delivereth souls; But he that uttereth lies causeth deceit. In the fear of Jehovah is strong confidence; And his children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of Jehovah is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death. In the multitude of people is the king’s glory; But in the want of people is the destruction of the prince. He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. A tranquil heart is the life of the flesh; But envy is the rottenness of the bones. He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker; But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him. The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing; But the righteous hath a refuge in his death. Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding; Butthat which isin the inward part of fools is made known. Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people. The king’s favor is toward a servant that dealeth wisely; But his wrath will beagainsthim that causeth shame. ”
“The wisdom of the prudent is to think about his way, but the folly of fools is deceit. Fools mock at making atonement for sins, but among the upright there is good will. The heart knows its own bitterness and joy; he will not share these with a stranger. The house of the wicked will be overthrown, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful, and mirth may end in heaviness. The unfaithful will be repaid for his own ways; likewise a good man will be rewarded for his ways. A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully considers his ways. A wise man fears, and shuns evil, but the fool is hotheaded and reckless. He who is quick to become angry will commit folly, and a crafty man is hated. The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. The evil bow down before the good, and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. The poor person is shunned even by his own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends. He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who has pity on the poor. Don't they go astray who plot evil? But love and faithfulness belong to those who plan good. In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty. The crown of the wise is their riches, but the folly of fools crowns them with folly. A truthful witness saves souls, but a false witness is deceitful. In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death. In the multitude of people is the king's glory, but in the lack of people is the destruction of the prince. He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly. The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones. He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him. The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge. Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. The king's favor is toward a servant who deals wisely, but his wrath is toward one who causes shame.”
“The wisdom of the shrewd person is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deception. Fools mock at reparation, but among the upright there is favor. The heart knows its own bitterness, and with its joy no one else can share. The household of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way that leads to death. Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief. The backslider will be paid back from his own ways, but a good person will be rewarded for his. A naive person will believe anything, but the shrewd person discerns his steps. A wise person is cautious and turns from evil, but a fool throws off restraint and is overconfident. A person who has a quick temper will do foolish things, and a person with crafty schemes will be hated. The naive have inherited folly, but the shrewd will be crowned with knowledge. Bad people have bowed before good people, and wicked people have bowed at the gates of someone righteous. A poor person will be disliked even by his neighbors, but those who love the rich are many. The one who despises his neighbor sins, but whoever is kind to the needy is blessed. Do not those who devise evil go astray? But those who plan good exhibit faithful covenant love. In all hard work there is profit, but merely talking about it only brings poverty. The crown of the wise is their riches, but the folly of fools is folly. A truthful witness rescues lives, but one who testifies falsely betrays them. In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and it will be a refuge for his children. The fear of the LORD is like a life-giving fountain, to turn people from deadly snares. A king’s glory is the abundance of people, but the lack of subjects is the ruin of a ruler. Someone with great understanding is slow to anger, but the one who has a quick temper exalts folly. A tranquil spirit revives the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones. The one who oppresses the poor has insulted his Creator, but whoever honors him shows favor to the needy. An evil person will be thrown down through his wickedness, but a righteous person takes refuge in his integrity. Wisdom rests in the heart of the discerning; it is not known in the inner parts of fools. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. The king shows favor to a wise servant, but his wrath falls on one who acts shamefully.”
“The wisdom of a discreet man is to understand his way: and the imprudence of fools erreth. A fool will laugh at sin, but among the just grace shall abide. The heart that knoweth the bitterness of his own soul, in his joy the stranger shall not intermeddle. The house of the wicked shall be destroyed: but the tabernacles of the just shall flourish. There is a way which seemeth just to a man: but the ends thereof lead to death. Laughter shall be mingled with sorrow, and mourning taketh hold of the ends of joy. A fool shall be filled with his own ways, and the good man shall be above him. The innocent believeth every word: the discreet man considereth his steps. No good shall come to the deceitful son: but the wise servant shall prosper in his dealings, and his way shall be made straight. A wise man feareth, and declineth from evil: the fool leapeth over, and is confident. The impatient man shall work folly: and the crafty man is hateful. The childish shall possess folly, and the prudent shall look for knowledge. The evil shall fall down before the good: and the wicked before the gates of the just. The poor man shall be hateful even to his own neighbour: but the friends of the rich are many. He that despiseth his neighbour, sinneth: but he that sheweth mercy to the poor, shall be blessed. He that believeth in the Lord, loveth mercy. They err that work evil: but mercy and truth prepare good things. In much work there shall be abundance: but where there are many words, there is oftentimes want. The crown of the wise, is their riches: the folly of fools, imprudence. A faithful witness delivereth souls: and the double dealer uttereth lies. In the fear of the Lord is confidence of strength, and there shall be hope for his children. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to decline from the ruin of death. In the multitude of people is the dignity of the king: and in the small number of the people the dishonour of the prince. He that is patient, is governed with much wisdom: but he that is impatient, exalteth his folly. Soundness of heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones. He that oppresseth the poor, upbraideth his maker: but he that hath pity on the poor, honoureth him. The wicked man shall be driven out in his wickedness: but the just hath hope in his death. In the heart of the prudent resteth wisdom, and it shall instruct all the ignorant. Justice exalteth a nation: but sin maketh nations miserable. A wise servant is acceptable to the king: he that is good for nothing shall feel his anger. ”
“The wisdom of the man of good sense makes his way clear; but the unwise behaviour of the foolish is deceit. In the tents of those hating authority there is error, but in the house of the upright man there is grace. No one has knowledge of a man's grief but himself; and a strange person has no part in his joy. The house of the sinner will be overturned, but the tent of the upright man will do well. There is a way which seems straight before a man, but its end is the ways of death. Even while laughing the heart may be sad; and after joy comes sorrow. He whose heart is turned away will have the reward of his ways in full measure; but a good man will have the reward of his doings. The simple man has faith in every word, but the man of good sense gives thought to his footsteps. The wise man, fearing, keeps himself from evil; but the foolish man goes on in his pride, with no thought of danger. He who is quickly angry will do what is foolish, but the man of good sense will have quiet. Foolish behaviour is the heritage of the simple, but men of good sense are crowned with knowledge. The knees of the evil are bent before the good; and sinners go down in the dust at the doors of the upright. The poor man is hated even by his neighbour, but the man of wealth has numbers of friends. He who has no respect for his neighbour is a sinner, but he who has pity for the poor is happy. Will not the designers of evil come into error? But mercy and good faith are for the designers of good. In all hard work there is profit, but talk only makes a man poor. Their wisdom is a crown to the wise, but their foolish behaviour is round the head of the unwise. A true witness is the saviour of lives; but he who says false things is a cause of deceit. For him in whose heart is the fear of the Lord there is strong hope: and his children will have a safe place. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, by which one may be turned from the nets of death. A king's glory is in the number of his people: and for need of people a ruler may come to destruction. He who is slow to be angry has great good sense; but he whose spirit is over-quick gives support to what is foolish. A quiet mind is the life of the body, but envy is a disease in the bones. He who is hard on the poor puts shame on his Maker; but he who has mercy on those who are in need gives him honour. The sinner is overturned in his evil-doing, but the upright man has hope in his righteousness. Wisdom has her resting-place in the mind of the wise, but she is not seen among the foolish. By righteousness a nation is lifted up, but sin is a cause of shame to the peoples. The king has pleasure in a servant who does wisely, but his wrath is against him who is a cause of shame.”
