“And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?”
“And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet? ”
“They asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"”
“So they asked John,“Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?””
“And they asked him and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?”
“And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet?”
“And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?”
Then said they to him, Who are you? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What say you of yourself?
He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.
And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
And they asked him, and said to him, Why baptize you then, if you be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not;
He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s lace I am not worthy to unloose.
These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. ¶
